Behaviour at Outside school hours care (OSHC)
We aim to provide an atmosphere where children have positive and active experiences and to minimise the potential for conflict. We believe in positive reinforcement, guiding children about what to do, rather than focusing on what not to do. Therefore, we endeavour to manage children’s behaviour through a supportive model, which includes efficient supervision, provision of effective role models, directing or re-directing children to other activities and working with children to set rules, follow the rules and understand the consequences of breaking those rules.
Behaviour management
Our preferred approach to behaviour management is to encourage and reinforce positive behaviour by:
- treating all children sensitively, respectfully and with dignity, regardless of their social background, gender, ethnicity or abilities
- freely encouraging and appreciating appropriate behaviour.
When a child’s behaviour is not appropriate, we:
- give the child up to 10 minutes of supervised reflection time
- notify parents if unacceptable behaviour continues.
If a child continues to behave in a way that is inconsistent with our behaviour expectations, we will discuss this with the parents/carers and the child. A child may be suspended from the program if unsatisfactory behaviour threatens the safety or wellbeing of any child or other person in the service.
Physical, verbal and emotional punishment is never justified or permitted as a behaviour management technique.
Any student excluded from Ferny Hills State School for behavioural reasons will also be excluded from the service for the period of the school exclusion.

Parent/carer behaviour
The OSHC is the place of work for our educators and the P&C has a duty of care to ensure they and the children feel and are safe in their workplace. We do not tolerate disrespect, swearing, raised voices and intimidating behaviour.
Anyone behaving in this way will be asked to leave the premises. Police will be called if a person does not leave when requested to do so.
Child/ren’s behaviour
To enable us to provide a safe service consistent with our philosophy for children we request that all children behave consistently with these expectations:
- We are cooperative.
- We share.
- We show consideration for others.
- We use kind words.
- We keep our hands and feet to ourselves.
- We do not bully others and we report all instances of bullying immediately.
- We stay within the boundaries of the service and stay where we can see staff (and they can see us) at all times.
- We open our eyes to new things and give them a go!
- We care for our own property and that of others and we use the service’s materials and equipment respectfully.
- We behave safely and follow all safety precautions.
A zero tolerance approach to bullying
All children have the right to feel safe and bullying is not accepted in our service. We work hard to provide a service where children are safe and we encourage children to speak up if they feel uncomfortable or intimidated.
